Many people choose kitchen utensils made of stainless steel for health reasons. Typical examples include containers for side dishes, frying pans, and pots. The problem arises when 'abrasives' are not properly cleaned off before use. If the carcinogenic abrasives that are stuck to the surface of the stainless steel are not removed, it can be harmful to health.
Abrasives that make iron soft... Left everywhere and released
It is important to wash stainless steel thoroughly when first purchased. Professor Kang Sang-wook from Sangmyung University’s Department of Chemistry warned on the YouTube channel 'Health Rescue Team' that "abrasives do not wash off with dish soap," and that "if you wipe it with regular cooking oil, it will come off black."
Abrasives mainly consist of silicon carbide and aluminum oxide. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, these fall under Group 2 carcinogens. Professor Kang warned, "This is defined based on respiratory standards, but it has not yet been properly identified what kind of combined toxicity it may cause when ingested with other substances."
Just kitchen towels and oil are enough... Must be wiped several times to be safe
The abrasives, which are mainly composed of iron oxide and abrasive oil, do not wash off well with detergent. However, the cleaning method is not difficult. Simply soak a kitchen towel in oil and wipe the stainless steel product. You can use cooking oil, olive oil, or grape seed oil.
When you wipe a new product with oil and see black residue, that is normal. Repeat this process 2-3 times until no abrasives come off. After wiping off the oil, wash it with dish soap and a soft sponge. It is good to use warm water at this time. Rinsing once more with water diluted with 1-2 tablespoons of vinegar will allow for clean use.
