If you are restricting your portions but still failing to lose weight, the culprit may not be the quantity of food, but the quality. Certain foods work actively against your metabolism and health goals. Lee Jin-bok, a board-certified family medicine physician with 30 years of experience treating obesity, recently shared the four foods he strictly avoids on his YouTube channel, "Doctor Lee TV."
1. Refined Cereals
Many people view cereal as a light, convenient meal, but Dr. Lee warns that most are made from refined grains like corn or wheat. These processed carbohydrates cause rapid spikes in blood sugar, which the body easily converts into stored fat. Chocolate-flavored or frosted varieties are particularly problematic due to high levels of added sugar. Because cereal is less satiating than a traditional meal, it is easy to overeat while underestimating the calorie count. If you must eat cereal, prioritize unsweetened products made from whole grains.
2. French Fries
French fries represent a dangerous combination of refined carbohydrates and trans fats. Dr. Lee cites research indicating that consistent consumption of French fries is a leading predictor of long-term weight gain, with daily consumers gaining an average of 1.58 kg every four years. Because they are calorie-dense but low in satiety, they are highly craveable and often lead to continued snacking throughout the day.
3. Ice Cream
While many turn to ice cream for stress relief, its high concentration of both sugar and fat makes it a major contributor to obesity. Dr. Lee points out a specific sensory trap: cold temperatures dull the tongue’s perception of sweetness. This means ice cream often contains more sugar than a consumer realizes, significantly increasing the risk of overconsumption.
4. Fruit Juice
Dr. Lee emphasizes that fruit should always be eaten whole. Whole fruits are rich in dietary fiber, which slows digestion and maintains fullness. However, the juicing process typically removes this essential fiber. Without fiber to slow it down, the liquid sugar is absorbed almost instantly, causing a sharp insulin spike that promotes fat storage. "These are four foods I would never eat—even if someone brought them right to me for free," he emphasized.
