Davichi member Lee Hae-ri failed to showcase her frozen jelly eating broadcast.
On the 13th, Lee Hae-ri uploaded a video titled 'Summary of Returning to Daily Life' on her YouTube channel. In the video, she said, "I heard that eating frozen jelly is trending these days," and showed herself eating frozen jelly. However, when she put the frozen jelly in her mouth, she reacted, "Huh? What is this? It's too hard, do you eat it melted? Is this a stone?" and was flustered. Trying to break one jelly, she said, "If you chew it, your jaw will dislocate, everyone," and melted it again to eat.
Still, she mentioned, "There is one jelly I really like. The texture is insane," and introduced her favorite rabbit-shaped jelly.
What negative effects can frozen jelly have on the body?
Recently, the trend of eating frozen jelly has spread mainly through social media. Various jellies are gathered and placed in a container, frozen for 3 to 5 hours, and then eaten. The sound made while chewing, the unique texture, and the colorful appearance are cited as reasons for the trend. However, caution is needed as following the so-called 'frozen jelly eating' can harm health.
Chewing on hard frozen jelly can crack teeth. This is especially dangerous for those who already have micro-cracks in their teeth or who usually experience sensitivity and pain. If there are fillings like resin or amalgam on the teeth, or if there are dental prosthetics like crowns, they can break or come off while chewing ice.
Jelly also easily causes cavities. It has a high sugar content that cavity-causing bacteria love, and due to its sticky nature, it tends to stay on teeth for a long time. It mainly sticks in the gaps between teeth or in the grooves of molars, making it hard to remove. According to the Korean Dental Association, the 'cavity-causing index' of jelly is 48 points, which is higher than caramel (38 points), snacks (27 points), and chocolate (15 points).
Due to its high sugar content, it also increases the risk of diabetes. Jelly is primarily made of carbohydrates that are quickly absorbed by the body, such as sugar and glucose syrup. This leads to a more rapid spike in blood sugar levels. Eating jelly alone on an empty stomach causes a strong blood sugar spike. This can lead to overeating, weight gain, and increased insulin resistance, negatively affecting blood sugar control. Frequent large fluctuations in blood sugar can also decrease the pancreas's ability to secrete insulin. Insulin is a hormone essential for blood sugar regulation.
Brush your teeth or rinse with water as soon as possible
To reduce the risk of cavities after consuming jelly, you should brush your teeth immediately. This is to physically remove sugar residues. It is especially important to thoroughly brush the gum line, between teeth, the chewing surfaces of molars, and the very back molars. Since toothbrush bristles may not fully reach between teeth, using dental floss or interdental brushes is recommended. If brushing is difficult right away, rinse with water or drink water. This can help dilute or wash away some of the sugar left in the mouth.
