Actor Kim Do-hoon showed his unique affection for eggs.

Recently, Kim Do-hoon appeared on the SBS variety show 'Whenever There Is a Chance'. Kim Do-hoon revealed his true passion for eggs, calling himself an 'egg enthusiast'. He said, "I eat 15 eggs a day" and added, "I can have half fried eggs soft and half hard." Eggs are considered a healthy food, but is it okay to eat more than 10 a day like Kim Do-hoon?

Healthy Eggs, What is the Recommended Daily Protein Intake??

Eggs are rich in protein. Protein helps synthesize and maintain muscles and boosts immunity. Just consuming 2 eggs a day can cover about 20% of the recommended intake. In addition to protein, eggs are also rich in vitamin B12, which protects nerve cells and reduces homocysteine that negatively affects cardiovascular health. Eggs also contain selenium, an antioxidant mineral that reduces oxidation in the body.

However, excessive intake of protein foods like eggs can lead to side effects. According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the recommended protein intake is 0.8 to 1.2g per kg of body weight. For someone who is 160cm tall and weighs 52kg, the protein intake should be between 42 and 62g. Consuming 2 eggs a day (14-16g), along with beans, tofu, and lean meat, can sufficiently meet the recommended intake.

Excessive Protein Intake, What Are the Negative Effects??

Excess protein causes calcium to be excreted in urine. Animal protein has a greater impact on calcium excretion than plant-based proteins like beans. If calcium continues to be lost from the body, bones become weak.

It is also important to be cautious about consuming a lot of protein without any exercise. The leftover protein in the body can accumulate as calories or body fat, producing nitrogen waste. This can convert to ammonia, which can damage the kidneys.

The risk of gout also increases. Gout is a disease characterized by extreme pain that feels like being cut by a knife. Gout is caused by uric acid, which is abundant in protein foods. Not only excessive egg consumption but also dietary habits that include alcohol and meat increase the risk of gout. Drinking alcohol can prevent uric acid from being properly excreted, leading to accumulation in the body.

People with already poor kidney health should be cautious about protein and potassium intake. Chronic kidney disease patients need to reduce protein intake to decrease uremic substances. However, it is necessary to sufficiently supplement calories with other foods besides protein. Patients with diabetes, gallstones, and hyperlipidemia should also consume eggs in moderation. In particular, for gallstone patients, the fat content in egg yolks can trigger gallbladder contractions, worsening symptoms.
