Annie (23), the granddaughter of Shinsegae Group's Chairman Lee Myung-hee, has revealed her secret to reducing swelling. Annie is a member of the group All Day Project.

Recently, in an interview with Vogue Korea, Annie introduced items from her bag and pulled out the 'octopus guasha'.
Annie said, "Another member of All Day Project, Young-seo (20), recommended the octopus guasha, saying 'I found something incredibly good,' which is how I started using it."

Annie demonstrated how to use the octopus guasha, explaining, "If you hold it like this and rub, the swelling really goes away," and added, "Just think of it as breaking down the head, neck, and face." Let's explore the actual effects of guasha.

Guasha Helps Eliminate Waste and Relaxes Tensed Muscles

Guasha massage uses tools made from materials like horn and jade to rub the skin and promote blood circulation. According to the Journal of the Korean Society of Aesthetic Dermatology, using guasha not only massages the muscles themselves but also stimulates the nerve areas that control the muscles, leading to relaxation of tensed areas. Stimulating the skin with guasha can enhance the secretion of histamine, which dilates blood vessels and improves blood circulation.

Massaging lymphatic drainage pathways, such as behind the ears, can help remove waste and quickly reduce swelling. When swelling decreases and elasticity improves, double chins disappear and jawlines become sharper.

A small study found that women in their 30s and 40s who received guasha massage on their face and shoulders twice a week for a total of 8 sessions saw a significant reduction in facial size. This study conducted by Honam University showed a reduction effect of 10% around the eyes, 8% around the cheekbones, and 18% around the jawline.

Using guasha on areas like the neck and shoulders, where muscles are tightly knotted, can relieve muscle pain and headaches. Improved overall blood circulation can also make the body feel lighter and boost immunity.

People with Sensitive Skin or Prone to Bruising Should Exercise Caution

Those with sensitive skin or who bruise easily should be cautious with guasha massage. Rubbing guasha on delicate skin can cause redness and swelling. If the massage pressure is too strong, it can lead to bruising.

Therefore, guasha massage should be performed with a pressure that does not strain the skin and blood vessels. Applying a moisturizing cream beforehand can help minimize friction. A duration of about 10 minutes is appropriate. If your skin is on the sensitive side, a shorter massage of about 5 minutes is recommended.
