Actress Yoon Mi-ra, 75, recently revealed her surprisingly simple secret to maintaining vibrant, youthful skin.
In a preview following an episode of SBS’s My Little Old Boy, it was announced that Yoon would be joining the show as its oldest cast member.
On the program, Yoon displayed a radiant complexion that belied her age. Comedian Jo Hye-ryun marveled at her appearance, exclaiming, “Your skin is a work of art.” Yoon then shared her minimalist skincare routine, explaining that she washes her face with water alone before finishing with basic lotion and lip balm.
Later, while speaking with an acquaintance who remarked, “You don’t have a single wrinkle on your neck,” Yoon jokingly attributed her youthful appearance to single life. “Maybe it’s because I never got married,” she quipped. “I have no regrets. I may not have a husband, but I have three rooms filled with clothes. Husbands cause the most headaches.”
She added with a laugh, “It’s not as if I never received marriage proposals—I got plenty.” When asked if there was anyone from her past she still thought about, Yoon replied, “Are they even still alive? It’s pointless,” drawing laughter from those around her.
Washing with Water and Minimizing Products Reduces Unnecessary Skin Irritation
A minimalist routine like Yoon’s—washing with water alone and applying only lotion and lip balm—offers the distinct advantage of reducing unnecessary skin irritation. As skin ages, natural oil production decreases, causing the skin barrier and its moisture-retention capacity to weaken. Overusing harsh cleansers or exfoliating excessively can strip natural lipids, leaving mature skin drier and more sensitive.
For individuals with dry or sensitive skin, a gentle morning wash with lukewarm water followed by a suitable moisturizer is often sufficient. Rather than layering numerous cosmetic products, using a few well-formulated products sparingly helps protect delicate skin barriers.
However, this water-only cleansing method is not universally suitable. Individuals with oily, acne-prone skin or those who sweat heavily require gentle cleansing agents to clear excess sebum, dirt, and pollutant buildup that could otherwise clog pores or trigger inflammation. A balanced alternative for dry or sensitive skin is to rinse with water alone in the morning and use a mild, hydrating cleanser at night.
Comprehensive anti-aging care also requires consistent sun protection alongside proper cleansing and moisturizing. Ultraviolet radiation degrades collagen and elastic fibers within the dermal layer, accelerating the formation of wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and sagging. Applying broad-spectrum sunscreen before outdoor exposure, securing adequate sleep, maintaining a nutrient-dense diet, exercising regularly, and abstaining from smoking and excessive alcohol intake remain essential foundational practices.
Chronic Stress Accelerates Skin Aging, but Marital Status Is Not a Direct Factor
Could remaining unmarried truly contribute to slower skin aging? While Yoon humorously remarked that avoiding marriage eliminated a major source of stress, chronic stress does indeed exert a tangible impact on skin health. Sustained stress elevated cortisol levels, disrupting sleep quality, weakening skin-barrier function, and intensifying inflammatory skin responses.
Severe or prolonged psychological stress can compromise microcirculation, making skin appear dull and fatigued while exacerbating preexisting dermatological conditions. For individuals experiencing severe marital conflict or emotional distress, reducing stress levels yields measurable benefits for both physical health and skin appearance.
Nevertheless, marriage itself does not inherently accelerate physical aging. A harmonious, supportive marriage can foster emotional stability and encourage healthy lifestyle choices. Conversely, remaining unmarried does not automatically guarantee a stress-free life. Ultimately, skin health and cellular aging are governed by a combination of cumulative stress, sleep hygiene, nutrition, physical activity, sun protection, and lifestyle habits, rather than marital status alone.
