GC Pharma announced on the 11th that South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has approved its Phase 2 clinical trial application (IND) for its investigational COVID-19 mRNA vaccine, GC4006A.

The Phase 2 study will evaluate the candidate’s optimal dosage and immunogenicity in healthy adults aged 19 to 85, directly comparing it against an active comparator vaccine. GC Pharma plans to administer the first dose within the year, accelerate trial progress, and submit a Phase 3 IND application in 2027.

The regulatory clearance comes nine months after GC4006A received Phase 1 IND approval on December 1, 2025. After filing for Phase 2 on July 27, the company secured approval in approximately six weeks—well ahead of its initial target for the second half of 2026. The development is supported by the "mRNA Vaccine Development Support Project for Pandemic Preparedness," a government initiative overseen by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the National Institute of Health, and the Korea Health Industry Development Institute.

GC Pharma emphasized that it remains the only domestic drugmaker proceeding on schedule under the government-backed project without delays. Previous domestic efforts encountered setbacks: ST Pharm voluntarily withdrew its Phase 1/2a trial for STP2250 in 2023, while Eyegene halted development of its candidate EG-COVID after reaching Phase 2a. Although a separate consortium comprising Korea BMI, Eyegene, Microuni, and MediciBio received Phase 1 approval for its candidate BMI2012ju last August, GC Pharma stands as the sole Korean developer to advance an mRNA candidate to Phase 2 trials.

The company attributed its rapid progress to internal technical capabilities built since 2019. GC Pharma has fully internalized the end-to-end mRNA drug manufacturing process, encompassing cell line development, mRNA synthesis, lipid nanoparticle (LNP) encapsulation, final product manufacturing, and high-precision quality analysis.

Beyond COVID-19, GC Pharma intends to leverage its clinical-grade mRNA-LNP platform for next-generation immuno-oncology therapies and treatments for rare genetic disorders. The strategic push aligns with the broadening scope of mRNA technology, which is expanding rapidly from infectious disease prevention to cancer therapeutics. Market research firm Grand View Research projects the global market for mRNA vaccines and therapeutics will grow to approximately $31.3 billion (about 42 trillion won) by 2030.

“This Phase 2 IND approval represents a critical milestone in securing vaccine sovereignty by definitively validating our mRNA-LNP platform through clinical trials,” said Lee Jae-woo, head of development at GC Pharma. “Building on this validated platform, we are evaluating pipeline expansion across multiple disease areas while driving toward complete national vaccine self-sufficiency by 2028.”
