Kwon Eun-bi Suffers Pilates Reformer Fall: "I'm So Small I Slipped Right Through"

Singer Kwon Eun-bi recently suffered a fall from a Pilates machine during a workout session.

In a video titled “Meeting up with IZONE members | Pilates fall accident(?)” posted on her YouTube channel, Kwon Eun-bi reunited with former IZONE bandmates before heading to a Pilates class. While hanging from a Pilates machine to perform an exercise, her supporting foot slipped, causing her to drop through a gap in the equipment.

Startled by the fall, the instructor asked if she was all right. Kwon Eun-bi replied that she was fine, immediately expressing concern for the machinery instead. The instructor remarked, “This is the first time anyone has fallen doing this,” adding, “You’re so small that you slipped right into the gap.”

Reformer Mechanics and Spring Resistance

The apparatus Kwon Eun-bi was using is a reformer, a foundational Pilates machine that utilizes spring resistance to build muscular strength, flexibility, and core stability. Regular reformer training activates deep abdominal and lumbar muscles, promoting postural alignment, structural symmetry, and long, lean muscle development.

However, because the reformer’s sliding carriage moves dynamically against spring tension, even a momentary lapse in focus can lead to a loss of balance and potential falls. To minimize injury risk, users must calibrate spring resistance to match their individual strength and skill level.

If spring tension is set too light, the carriage can shift unexpectedly, compromising the user's center of gravity. Conversely, excessive tension can make controlling the movement difficult. Before executing any exercise, practitioners should ensure proper hand and foot placement, keeping feet firmly planted on the footbar and bracing securely with their hands to prevent slipping.

Box Attachments and Elevated Fall Risks

The specific exercise Kwon Eun-bi was performing involved placing a box on top of the reformer carriage—a variation that carries a significantly higher risk of falls than standard carriage exercises. The elevated box increases distance from the ground, amplifying minor wobbles and instigating sudden balance loss.

Falls are particularly common during movements that require standing or sitting on the box, balancing on one foot, or rapidly changing direction. To maintain safety, users should properly lock or tension the carriage when mounting or dismounting the box, shifting weight slowly and deliberately. Exercises should be performed using controlled muscular effort rather than momentum.

Additionally, wearing grip socks with non-slip soles can substantially reduce accidents caused by footwear slipping on equipment surfaces. If a fall occurs and pain or swelling persists in the wrists, shoulders, lower back, or joints, prompt medical evaluation is recommended to rule out fractures or ligament damage.
