Some people struggle to shed pounds even when eating lightly, while others see little progress despite consistent exercise. While it is tempting to attribute the struggle to a naturally slow metabolism, experts emphasize examining everyday habits first.

Yoo Hye-mi, a board-certified plastic surgeon, recently highlighted what she termed the "five traits of people who cannot lose weight" on social media. Her list includes: replacing meals with bread or snacks, drinking a latte after eating, skipping weekday meals only to binge on weekends, lying down immediately after dining, and grazing continuously throughout the day.

Replacing Balanced Meals with Bread or Snacks

"Refined carbohydrates like bread and packaged snacks trigger sharp spikes in blood sugar," Yoo explained. "As glucose levels rapidly plunge afterward, hunger returns almost immediately."

These ultra-processed foods are typically laden with white flour and refined sugar. Unlike whole grains or balanced meals, they lack sufficient dietary fiber and protein, resulting in low satiety and rapid blood sugar spikes. Sharp rises in blood sugar stimulate excess insulin secretion, making the body more prone to storing surplus energy as fat.

Drinking Sweet Lattes After Meals

Enjoying a sweet latte after a meal is a common routine for many, but these beverages often contain heavy syrups and sugars, with a single large cup packing roughly 300 calories.

This delivers a surge of extra calories on top of a full meal. "Liquid sugar drives blood sugar straight up and easily turns into body fat," Yoo noted. For weight management, she recommends opting for an unsweetened Americano or a low-sugar alternative.

Skipping Weekday Meals and Bingeing on Weekends

"A habit of bingeing on rich foods every weekend makes it easy for the body to accumulate fat," Yoo cautioned. Many individuals severely restrict their calorie intake during the workweek, only to overeat on weekends out of a reward mindset.

Extreme restriction heightens hunger, encourages bingeing, and leads to consuming large calorie amounts at once. These irregular eating patterns cause wide blood sugar fluctuations and disrupt appetite-regulating hormones. To achieve sustainable weight control, maintaining three balanced, calorie-appropriate meals daily is far more effective than periodic fasting and overindulgence.

Lying Down Immediately After Eating

While lying down after a meal does not instantly transform food into fat, establishing a low-movement routine after dining reduces total daily energy expenditure and promotes blood sugar spikes.

"Lying down right after eating makes it easy to accumulate abdominal fat," Yoo warned. Conversely, taking a light 10-to-20-minute walk after meals helps blunt sharp rises in blood sugar and aids digestion.

Grazing Frequently Throughout the Day

"Habitually eating small amounts all day puts the body into 'weight-gain mode,'" Yoo explained.

Constant grazing often leads to unconscious snacking, causing people to drastically underestimate their total caloric intake. Successful weight management often involves portioning snacks as deliberate meals and keeping a food diary to increase awareness and prevent overeating.
