Actor Namkoong Min recently opened up about the rigorous eating habits required to maintain his signature lean physique and razor-sharp jawline. Appearing as a guest on an episode of the JTBC variety show Please Take Care of My Refrigerator, Namkoong revealed that his face swells exceptionally easily, even with minimal food intake. To combat this, on the day of a shoot, he completely delays eating his targeted protein-and-vegetable meals until all filming has wrapped for the day.
A peek inside his refrigerator highlighted his commitment to fitness, revealing a space stocked with clean staples like broccoli, tomatoes, chicken breast, and mushrooms. When facing a shoot the following day, Namkoong sacrifices flavor entirely, relying on a utilitarian meal of chicken breast and instant rice. His morning routine is equally calculated: a breakfast juice prepared by his wife, blending Chinese yam, banana, and roasted soybean powder.
When host Kim Sung-joo asked if there were any favorite dishes he completely cuts out for self-management, Namkoong smiled. "In my own words, I hold back from foods that make you look kind of uglier," he said. "I absolutely love foods that cause your blood sugar to skyrocket—things like pork belly, tteokbokki, and jajangmyeon. If I indulge in those for just a day or two, I instantly gain 3 kg."
His discipline extends to alcohol as well. While he enjoys beer, he uses a highly specific method to prevent overindulging: "Once I start drinking, I want to keep going. So when I have a strong craving, I buy exactly one can of beer and a side of whelk, put a straw in the can, and drink it very slowly." However, he admitted that during his off-season when strict management is unnecessary, he can drink for up to 14 hours straight, occasionally wrapping up at 5 a.m.
The Science of Facial Swelling and Reversible Weight Gain
From a medical perspective, Namkoong’s aversion to foods that "make you look uglier" is well-founded. Dishes packed with refined carbohydrates and sugars—such as tteokbokki, jajangmyeon, bread, and sugary beverages—cause a rapid spike in blood glucose levels. This triggers a heavy release of insulin to stabilize blood sugar. Elevated insulin levels prompt the kidneys to reabsorb more sodium, which forces the body to retain fluids, directly causing edema, or visible swelling in the face and body.
Foods like jajangmyeon and tteokbokki are particularly notorious because they pair high refined carbohydrates with heavy sodium content, exacerbating fluid retention. However, experts note that sudden, short-term weight gain from a dietary slip-up is not immediately stored as fat. Instead, a large portion of that sudden weight gain consists of glycogen and the water that binds to it. Glygocen, stored in the liver and muscles, naturally holds onto water, temporarily inflating the scale. If an individual quickly pivots back to a clean diet, this weight can be shed relatively easily before the glycogen is synthesized into long-term body fat.
Analyzing Namkoong's Breakfast Blend
Namkoong’s signature morning juice also offers genuine physiological benefits for managing fluid retention. The mucilaginous component found in Chinese yam, mucin, protects the stomach lining, making it highly soothing on an empty stomach. Bananas provide an abundance of potassium, which actively helps the body flush out excess sodium, while the roasted soybean powder supplies essential plant-based protein. Together, these three ingredients offer a stomach-friendly, macro-balanced start to the day.
However, clinical nutritionists add a note of caution regarding liquid diets. When solid ingredients are finely blended and consumed as a beverage, they bypass the chewing process and pass through the gastrointestinal tract much faster. This accelerated digestion can cause blood sugar to rise more rapidly than it would from consuming whole foods, and because liquid meals provide a shorter window of satiety, they can inadvertently lead to increased hunger later in the day.
