Members of BTS recently gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at their pre-show ritual: eating honey to boost their stamina.
Member Kim Tae-hyung (V) recently shared a photo on social media with the caption "Eating honey," showing the group preparing for their highly anticipated concert in Goyang. In the image, Kim Tae-hyung and Jung Ho-seok (J-Hope) are seated at a table while Kim Seok-jin (Jin) stands nearby, all consuming honey. As BTS returns for their first full-group performance in nearly four years, the choice of this natural sweetener highlights its role in managing a grueling schedule.
A Rapid Source of Vitality
Honey is a natural superfood that serves as a highly efficient fuel source. Its primary components are glucose and fructose, and because more than 90% of honey consists of these simple sugars, it is absorbed almost instantly into the bloodstream. This makes it an ideal choice for performers needing a rapid energy spike.
Furthermore, honey is rich in B vitamins, which are essential for energy metabolism and fatigue recovery. On days when the body feels sluggish or physically overextended, honey provides the necessary nutrients to keep the nervous system and muscles functioning at their peak.
Nutrient-Dense and Lower in Calories Than Sugar
Despite its intense sweetness, honey is surprisingly lower in calories than refined sugar, containing approximately 294 kcal per 100g compared to sugar’s 384 kcal. It is also packed with essential minerals:
Potassium: Aids in the excretion of excess sodium.
Magnesium: Supports muscle relaxation and stabilizes the nervous system.
Zinc: Boosts immune function and supports cellular healing.
Beyond energy, honey possesses antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can bolster the body’s resistance to common illnesses like colds. Research published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition also suggests that honey acts as a prebiotic, promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.
Moderation and Proper Storage Are Key
While honey offers numerous benefits, it must be consumed with caution. Because it contains antigens derived from pollen, individuals with allergies should monitor for symptoms like an itchy mouth or throat.
To preserve its delicate nutrients, honey should be stored away from direct sunlight and never exposed to high temperatures for extended periods. It is best consumed raw or added to lukewarm water rather than boiling liquids.
Finally, moderation is critical to prevent issues such as obesity or dyslipidemia. The American Heart Association recommends a daily limit of no more than nine teaspoons for men and six teaspoons for women and children. For a high-performance group like BTS, honey is a strategic tool, but for the average person, it remains a supplement to be enjoyed in measured amounts.
