Ok Joo-hyun, the former Fin.K.L member turned musical performer, has opened up about the hard-earned wisdom behind her fitness routine. In a recent video titled The Ultimate Self-Management of Ok Joo-hyun uploaded to her YouTube channel, she addressed the frequent questions she receives regarding her slim figure. "Due to the nature of my job, I have to manage my physique regardless of the season," she noted, before pivotally warning her audience: "You should never do extreme dieting."
According to Ok, drastic weight-loss measures do more than just harm the internal organs—they trigger rapid physical aging. Instead of restrictive eating, she advocates for small, consistent habits, such as taking the stairs and prioritizing gut health. "I noticed my waist size reduced by about two inches once my gut health improved," she shared.
The Hidden Costs of Nutritional Deficiencies
Extreme dieting, characterized by the consumption of only specific foods or a drastic reduction in total caloric intake, often leads to a cascade of physiological side effects. Many dieters mistakenly eliminate carbohydrates entirely. However, because carbohydrates are the primary energy source for the brain, a deficiency can lead to lethargy, decreased cognitive judgment, and a disrupted daily life.
Furthermore, a sudden drop in meal intake often results in deficiencies of protein, vitamins, and iron. This systemic lack of nutrients weakens hair follicles—increasing the risk of hair loss—and can trigger hormonal imbalances, leading to irregular menstrual cycles. In some cases, these restrictive patterns can also pave the way for anxiety and clinical eating disorders.
High-Intensity Exercise and the "Reactive Oxygen" Trap
Attempts at rapid transformation often involve setting unreasonable exercise goals. While regular activity is the cornerstone of youth, improper high-intensity training can paradoxically accelerate aging.
When the body undergoes intense strength training, it enters a state of oxygen deficiency, causing the metabolic rate to spike. If a person stops this high-intensity exertion too abruptly, the body suddenly ceases its heavy oxygen consumption. This "excess" oxygen can transform into reactive oxygen species (free radicals), which attack healthy cells and promote premature aging.
Additionally, losing a significant amount of fat in a short window can lead to "facial aging." When fat disappears too quickly, skin elasticity cannot keep pace, leading to sagging and wrinkles. Experts recommend aiming for a sustainable weight loss of 2–3 kg per month rather than aggressive goals exceeding 5 kg.
The Role of Probiotics in Body Composition
The musical performer also emphasized the importance of nutritional supplementation, specifically probiotics. Beyond improving digestion, certain Lactobacillus complexes have been recognized by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for their functional role in reducing body fat and promoting skin health. By supporting a healthy microbiome, these supplements can aid in weight management without the cellular stress caused by starvation.
