Chaeryeong, a member of the idol group ITZY, stated that she always brings a portable scale for weight management even during overseas tours.
On January 30, members of ITZY appeared on the YouTube channel 'Jipdaesung'. During the broadcast, ITZY announced that they will start their world tour performances on February 13.
In response, Daesung asked the ITZY members if there are any unusual items they always bring while touring for the world performances.
Chaeryeong replied, "I have a small portable scale. It's so small that it's hard to fit both feet on it," and added, "I always carry it with me." When Daesung asked, "Do you check your weight every day?" Chaeryeong confirmed, "Yes. Hotels sometimes provide scales, but the readings can vary slightly from scale to scale," explaining that she carries her own scale to avoid discrepancies.
Weighing Daily, Self-Monitoring Effectiveness
Chaeryeong is well-known as a 'slim idol' who maintains a slender figure at a height of 167cm. The practice of 'weighing daily,' which she continues even when abroad, is actually beneficial for dieting. This is due to the self-monitoring effect. Self-monitoring is considered a key factor for successful weight loss in behavioral psychology. It helps individuals adjust their behavior by reminding them of their goals.
A study involving 47 participants published in the 'Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' in 2015 found that the group that weighed themselves daily lost an average of 6.1kg more over six months than the group that weighed themselves less frequently. The American Heart Association journal also published results from a follow-up study on weight changes involving 1,042 adults. According to this study, those who did not weigh themselves at all or only weighed themselves once a week were unsuccessful in losing weight. In contrast, those who weighed themselves 6 to 7 times a week lost 1.7% of their weight over 12 months.
Chaeryeong Also Revealed She Loses Weight by Eating 'Almonds'
Meanwhile, Chaeryeong previously revealed that she eats 'almonds' for dieting. She mentioned on JTBC's 'Jjandangpo' that "when I needed to lose weight quickly, I only ate 5 to 6 almonds a day," adding, "Eating almonds with hot tea gave me a good feeling of fullness."
Almonds are rich in protein, dietary fiber, and unsaturated fats, which enhance the feeling of fullness. Research has shown that groups consuming almonds as snacks tend to eat less in subsequent meals compared to those consuming the same calorie amount in carbohydrate snacks. This is because almonds quickly alleviate hunger. Although almonds are relatively high in calories, the actual absorbed calories are lower. This is because the fats in almonds are trapped in cell walls, preventing some from being absorbed and leading to excretion. It can be said that the actual absorbed calories are 10-15% lower than the indicated calories.
However, the extreme restriction of consuming only 5 to 6 almonds a day can be harmful to health. Rapid muscle loss can occur, and even if weight is lost, the risk of rebound increases. There is also a risk of cardiovascular issues due to electrolyte imbalances.
To see dieting effects, it is recommended to consume about 20 to 25 almonds (20 to 30g) as a snack or a small amount before meals.
