Bae Gi-sung (53) revealed his diet method.
On the 5th, during the broadcast of KBS CoolFM 'Park Myung-soo's Radio Show', Park Myung-soo mentioned Bae Gi-sung's appearance, saying, "I saw him at Yoon Jung-soo's wedding and thought he was sick," referring to his noticeable weight loss.
In response, Bae Gi-sung said, "People are asking if I have diabetes. I have been on a diet for 6 to 7 months. I lost 18kg and have been maintaining it." He added, "I lost weight and I'm not sick. I can't miss how my clothes fit. Dieting is best when you starve. That's why I lost muscle too. I can lose weight and then do muscle workouts again," he explained.
When asked about his wife's reaction, Bae Gi-sung said, "She is very happy but tells me to stop losing weight," and reflected, "When you starve, you become sensitive. I think I was very sensitive." Park Myung-soo then said, "Your nose is still the same," to which Bae Gi-sung replied, "Strangely, my nose didn't shrink. These days, when I shoot cover videos, I get comments asking if I'm using a 'bulging lens,'" which made everyone laugh.
If you lose weight by starving, muscle can also be lost, lowering your basal metabolic rate
The method of losing weight by starving, like Bae Gi-sung, is effective for burning body fat, but there is a very high possibility of also losing muscle mass. The human body, when in a state of energy deficiency for a prolonged period, breaks down not only stored fat but also muscle protein to use as an energy source.
Especially when protein intake is insufficient and there is no muscle stimulation, muscle loss progresses even faster. Particularly, when muscle decreases, the basal metabolic rate lowers, which increases the risk of gaining weight when returning to a normal diet.
Moreover, even if you exercise with reduced muscle mass, energy consumption is less than before, and it is also difficult to increase exercise intensity. As a result, body fat can easily increase again, and recovering muscle takes more time and effort. In other words, the process of rebuilding muscle after losing it is much less efficient than losing weight while maintaining muscle.
Increased secretion of stress hormones can lead to irritability and emotional fluctuations
Additionally, if food intake significantly decreases due to a starving diet, the energy supplied to the brain becomes insufficient, leading to decreased concentration, irritability, anxiety, and emotional fluctuations. The secretion of the stress hormone cortisol increases, causing one to react sensitively to minor stimuli or have difficulty regulating emotions.
Therefore, rather than extreme fasting, it is advisable to lose weight through appropriate calorie control, balanced nutrition including protein, and consistent exercise combining strength training and aerobic exercise. This method may result in a slower weight loss rate, but the body's shape and health indicators improve much more stably.
The nose, mostly made of cartilage and bone, is hardly affected by weight
Meanwhile, even if Bae Gi-sung has lost weight, it may feel like the size of his nose remains the same. When weight is lost from the face, the subcutaneous fat around the cheeks, jawline, and eyes decreases first, and the nose is mostly made up of cartilage and bone structure, so it is hardly affected by changes in body fat.
In fact, as other areas of the face become slimmer, the nose may appear more prominent due to an optical illusion. This is a normal result of the surrounding volume decreasing, which changes the proportions.
