Tuna mayo is a versatile kitchen staple that works seamlessly in everything from gimbap to sandwiches and rice bowls. Easy to prepare and widely popular across all age groups, it frequently appears on family menus. However, classic tuna mayo relies on a generous amount of mayonnaise, leaving it high in calories and fat—and heavy enough that health-conscious diners often hesitate to enjoy it regularly.

Fortunately, a simple ingredient swap retains the convenience and taste of the original while creating a much lighter profile.

Greek Yogurt Slashes Calories and Fat

The secret to a healthier recipe lies in substituting mayonnaise with Greek yogurt. This swap substantially reduces calories and fat while delivering a clean, bright flavor.

The recipe is straightforward: combine one small can of tuna—thoroughly drained of oil—with 2 tablespoons of Greek yogurt, 3 tablespoons of minced onion, 1/2 tablespoon of whole-grain mustard, 1 tablespoon of allulose or sugar, and a pinch of black pepper. Mix until evenly blended. This lighter mixture works exceptionally well as a filling for gimbap, sandwiches, or wraps. While slightly less rich than traditional mayonnaise, it eliminates greasy heaviness and offers a crisp, refreshing finish.

The nutritional contrast is stark. Three tablespoons (about 45 grams) of mayonnaise—the typical amount used in standard recipes—contain between 270 and 300 calories. By contrast, the same amount of Greek yogurt contains just 40 to 70 calories. Greek yogurt is also higher in protein and significantly lower in fat, while its thick, strained texture mimics the creamy mouthfeel expected in traditional tuna mayo.

A High-Protein, Diet-Friendly Pairing

Canned tuna and Greek yogurt are both celebrated staples for weight management. Tuna is a lean, high-protein food rich in taurine and omega-3 fatty acids, which support cardiovascular and cognitive health. Because canned tuna is often packed in vegetable oil, draining the oil thoroughly ensures you retain mostly lean protein.

Greek yogurt is made by straining liquid whey from standard yogurt, concentrating its protein content and yielding a dense, rich texture. High protein intake supports muscle maintenance and enhances satiety, making weight management easier. Greek yogurt also contains probiotics that promote gut health and aid digestion, alongside lower lactose levels than regular yogurt. To maximize health benefits, select plain, unsweetened varieties free from added sugars.

Add Cucumber for Texture and Sodium Balance

To elevate both the flavor and nutrient profile, try adding cucumber. Dice fresh cucumber into bite-sized pieces, sprinkle lightly with salt, squeeze out excess moisture, and fold into the tuna mixture. The added crunch enlivens the dish, creating a fresh combination that can be enjoyed on its own as a salad or paired with whole grains and bread.

Cucumber is naturally low in calories and provides vitamin C, vitamin K, and dietary fiber. It is also rich in potassium, an essential mineral that helps the body excrete excess sodium—making it an ideal pairing with sodium-rich canned tuna.
