Adsorbing Odor Molecules is the Key to a Fresh Appliance

When an air fryer is used to cook meat or fish, a distinctive, lingering smell often remains. This odor can easily transfer to different ingredients the following day, tainting your next meal. Even after washing the basket, odor-causing compounds that have seeped deep into the unit’s interior are difficult to eliminate. To keep your appliance truly clean, you must address the source of the scent.

If an air fryer is used repeatedly without deep cleaning, leftover oil and cooking residue oxidize and break down, turning into a sticky substance that coats the inner walls. During this process, odor molecules become fixed in place, making them increasingly stubborn. While the basket is easily washed with mild detergent, cleaning around the heating element and the inner walls requires a medium that can effectively adsorb these molecules.

Why Baked Lemon Slices Work

Lemons are a highly effective, natural solution for neutralizing internal odors. To clean your unit, thinly slice a lemon into pieces roughly 5 mm thick. If the slices are too thick, the moisture will not evaporate sufficiently; if they are too thin, they may burn.

Place two to three slices in the basket and run the air fryer at 180°C for three minutes. As the moisture in the lemon turns to steam, it circulates throughout the interior. The citrus scent helps mask odors, while the citric acid works to break down stubborn oil and residue. Furthermore, limonene—a compound found in lemons—binds with oil molecules to help lift away smells. Once the cycle is finished, let the unit cool completely before wiping the interior with a damp cloth or paper towel.

Alternatives to Fresh Lemons

If you do not have fresh lemons on hand, lemon juice serves as an excellent substitute. Simply dilute the juice with water, pour it into a heat-resistant container, and run the air fryer at the same settings used for the slices.

For an even quicker fix, you can create a cleaning spray by mixing soju and lemon juice at a 1:1 ratio. Spray the solution directly onto the interior walls of the main unit and let it sit for approximately 10 minutes. Afterward, wipe the surface clean with paper towels or a fresh dishcloth to effectively remove the odor.
