There is a common refrain among long-married couples: "We don't live for love anymore; we live for loyalty." This sentiment isn't exclusive to marriage; long-term partners often report a decline in intense romantic passion as years pass.

Science suggests this isn't just a matter of routine—it’s a reflection of how the brain evolves. Initially, the human brain processes a romantic partner very differently than a close friend, but as a relationship matures, these neural distinctions begin to fade.

The Brain’s "Unique Signal" for Partners

According to a study published in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, the brain generates unique neural signals for a partner during the early stages of a relationship. however, as the bond matures, this distinction tends to diminish.

A research team from Kyoto University in Japan conducted the study with 47 unmarried men in their 20s who were currently in relationships. The participants, who had been dating their partners for an average of 18 months, were asked to select one close female friend and one close male friend for comparison.

Monitoring the Reward System

The researchers used functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to monitor brain activity while participants performed a social reward delay task. This task was designed to measure the expectation of social rewards. Participants were shown signals on a screen indicating whether their partner, their female friend, or their male friend was about to appear.

When the target appeared briefly, participants had to press a button as quickly as possible. A successful reaction was rewarded with a video of the person smiling and making positive gestures, while a slow reaction resulted in a neutral face.

The results showed that participants were most motivated by their partners. They reacted faster when anticipating their partner’s video and rated those clips as significantly more likable than those of their friends.

The Role of the Nucleus Accumbens

Brain imaging revealed that the nucleus accumbens—a region deep in the brain that relies heavily on dopamine to process rewards and motivation—encodes information about romantic partners in a specific way.

The analysis showed distinct activity patterns when participants thought of their partners compared to their female friends. Interestingly, the neural patterns for female friends were more similar to those of male friends than to romantic partners. The researchers explained, "These results show that the brain recognizes a partner as a unique social entity, distinct from the general category of friendship."

From Passionate Love to Companionate Love

However, the study found that these neural signals changed depending on the duration of the relationship. The longer the couple had been dating, the less distinct the partner’s neural signal became when compared to a friend’s.

"Participants in longer relationships showed less pronounced neurological differences between their partner and their female friends," the researchers stated. "The unique patterns in the nucleus accumbens that distinguish a partner appear to weaken over time."

The team noted that this shift likely reflects a natural transition in human biology: moving from the intense, "passionate love" of the early stages to a more stable, "companionate love" that resembles an intimate, lifelong friendship. While the "sparks" may appear quieter on an fMRI, they are replaced by a neurological state of stability and deep-rooted companionship.
