When it comes to shedding persistent belly fat, many people instinctively turn to brisk walking, sit-ups, or crunches. While crunches are effective for strengthening the abdominal wall—specifically because they isolate the upper torso without lifting the lower back—they are only one piece of the puzzle. To truly transform the midsection, it is more effective to engage the entire core, including the lower back, glutes, and upper thighs. Targeting the obliques (side muscles) in addition to the front of the abdomen is also essential. Here are three powerful indoor exercises designed to burn calories and tighten the waistline.

Side Plank

The plank is a foundational core exercise that stabilizes the muscles surrounding the midsection. The side variation specifically targets the obliques and deep core stabilizers. To perform this move, lie on your side and place your forearm on the floor, ensuring your elbow is directly beneath your shoulder. Extend your legs and stack your feet. Using your elbow as a pivot point, lift your hips until your body forms a straight line from head to heels. Hold this position for 30–45 seconds, then switch sides. Aim for 10 repetitions per side.

Modified Push-Up Walk

A full-body movement that incorporates both the upper and lower body is highly effective for abdominal strengthening and fat loss. Begin in a standard push-up position with your hands placed slightly wider than shoulder width. Keeping your arms fully extended and your core tight, "walk" your hands forward and backward in place, alternating between the right and left hand. Repeat this sequence 10–12 times. For those looking to increase the intensity, try lifting one leg off the floor while performing the hand walks.

Crocodile Walk

This dynamic movement engages the entire core and triggers significant calorie burn. Start in a push-up position and place a small towel or specialized sliders under your toes. Using only your hands to pull your weight, "walk" forward for approximately 30 meters while dragging your feet behind you. After completing the distance, rest for 60–90 seconds. This sequence constitutes one set; performing two sets per workout provides a high-intensity challenge that targets the deep abdominal muscles and improves functional strength.
