[K-Best Hospital] Musculoskeletal Care — Bumin Hospital

Early last year, the Netflix medical drama The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call captivated global audiences, racking up 11.9 million views in its second week and outpacing even Squid Game 2. The high-stakes emergency room depicted in the show is not a set; it is the real-life ER of Seoul Bumin Hospital. As a Level 1 emergency institution serving Seoul’s Gangseo and Yangcheon districts, the hospital is a critical hub where trauma patients are rushed when every second counts.

When Seoul Bumin Hospital opened in 2011, its future was a subject of much speculation. However, since 2018, it has ranked as the top non-university hospital in South Korea on Newsweek’s "World’s Best Hospitals" list for six consecutive years.

The hospital gained further prestige in 2020 when Dr. Jung Jin-yeop—a former Minister of Health and Welfare and past president of Seoul National University Bundang Hospital—joined as Medical Center Director. A renowned pediatric orthopedic specialist, Dr. Jung is also celebrated for his wit, carrying on the legacy of "humor in medicine" established by legends like Dr. Ha Kwon-ik and Dr. Sung Sang-cheol.

A Mecca for Sports Medicine and Robotic Innovation

In 2023, Dr. Ha Yong-chan, a protégé of the late Dr. Ha Kwon-ik, joined the team to transform the hospital into a global "sports medicine mecca." Bumin now manages elite athletes at the level of the EPL, MLB, and PGA. It is the official hospital for the Handball H League and provides specialized care for the Kiwoom Heroes baseball team, the national short-track speed skating team, and professional golfers like Ok Tae-hoon.

To support this elite clientele, the hospital introduced the VALD system, a top-tier physical monitoring suite used by premier global clubs. Dr. Ha Yong-chan also recently achieved a medical milestone by performing Korea’s first total hip arthroplasty using a domestically produced surgical robot, expanding robotic precision from knee surgeries to the hip.

From a Small Busan Clinic to a National Network

The Bumin Hospital Group (Indang Medical Foundation) began in 1985 as a small orthopedic clinic in Busan founded by Chairman Jung Heung-tae. "I focused entirely on the patient's perspective and delivering accurate diagnoses," says Chairman Jung. As word of the young doctor's skill and kindness spread, the clinic flourished.

In 1989, the hospital moved to Deokcheon-dong. Despite being undeveloped at the time, Chairman Jung saw its potential and renamed the facility "Bumin," meaning "the hospital of Busan citizens." In a bold move for a private clinic, he invested in state-of-the-art CT equipment and specialized care for the spine and joints.

During the 1997 financial crisis, Bumin doubled down on innovation, establishing research institutes for spine and joint medicine. However, Chairman Jung noticed that elderly patients often suffered from underlying conditions like hypertension and diabetes. He concluded that "treating joints alone is only half of medicine" and transitioned Bumin into a general hospital that combines surgical expertise with a comprehensive internal medicine safety net.

The HSS Alliance: Standardizing World-Class Care

Chairman Jung sought to bring global standards to Korea. In 2015, Bumin Hospital became the first Asian member of the HSS (Hospital for Special Surgery) Global Orthopedic Alliance. HSS, affiliated with Cornell University, is consistently ranked as the world's top orthopedic hospital.

"Korean surgeons already had world-class hands-on skills," Chairman Jung explains. "What we lacked was a standardized Clinical Pathway (CP)." The collaboration focused on manualizing the entire patient journey from admission to discharge. The results were immediate: patients began walking the day of or the day after surgery, surprised by the minimal pain and rapid recovery. To this day, Bumin remains HSS’s only partner in Asia.

The Future: A "Medical Belt" and AI Integration

Bumin has grown into a network of six hospitals, with a seventh—Myeongji Bumin Hospital—scheduled to open in 2028. The group is also preparing to open Jeju International Bumin Hospital, completing a strategic "medical belt" linking Seoul, Busan, and Jeju.

In this new era, the hospital is embracing digital healthcare. Bumin was the first general hospital in Korea to adopt the ezCaretech EMR system used by major university hospitals. It is now implementing generative AI for medical record automation, AI-driven preoperative simulations, and digital post-discharge monitoring.

"The goal is not the technology itself, but improving the patient experience," says Chairman Jung. This philosophy is even reflected in the architecture of the Seoul hospital. Built on a former gas station site, the building features a U-shaped glass exterior draped in ivy. This design allows patients to look out at nature from their beds, fulfilling Chairman Jung’s vision of creating a hospital so comfortable it feels like home.
