If you joined a gym as a New Year’s resolution and have been working out religiously without seeing the scale move, it isn't necessarily a lack of willpower. New research reveals that our bodies are hardwired to "save" energy, sabotaging our weight loss efforts through a biological survival mechanism.

The "Energy Compensation" Effect

A research team led by Professor Herman Pontzer at Duke University analyzed data from 14 large-scale studies involving 450 adults. Their findings, published in the journal Current Biology, show that a significant portion of the calories we burn during exercise is offset by the body reducing energy expenditure in other areas. This is known as the "Energy Compensation" effect.

For years, the standard health model followed a simple additive formula: Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) + Calories Burned through Exercise = Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). Under this logic, if your body naturally burns 2,000 kcal and you add a 400 kcal workout, you should expend 2,400 kcal and lose weight accordingly.

The "Constrained Model" of Energy

However, Professor Pontzer’s "constrained model" suggests that the human body has a functional limit on the total energy it can expend in a day. When physical activity levels spike dramatically, the body perceives this as a threat to survival and begins to manage energy more efficiently.

To keep total energy expenditure within a set range, the body forcibly reduces the energy allocated to critical internal processes such as immune function, cell repair, and digestion.

The study found that the average "energy compensation" rate is 28%. This means that if you burn 100 kcal through strenuous exercise, your body "saves" 28 kcal by slowing down other internal functions. As a result, your actual additional expenditure is only 72 kcal.

Why Your Diet Makes the Plateau Worse

This compensatory effect is at its peak when a person restricts calories while increasing exercise. The body recognizes the dual threat of less fuel and higher demand as a "survival crisis" and aggressively activates its "energy-saving mode."

In some animal studies, this compensatory effect reached 100%. In these cases, even if 100 kcal was expended through activity, the body saved an identical 100 kcal elsewhere, resulting in a net additional expenditure of zero. This explains the "plateau" phenomenon, where weight loss stalls despite continued intense dieting and exercise.

Strength Training vs. Aerobic Exercise

Not all movement triggers this response equally. Aerobic exercises like running tend to show a strong energy compensation effect. Conversely, resistance training (strength training) shows a much less pronounced effect, suggesting that building muscle may be a more effective strategy for long-term weight management.

Exercise is for Health, Diet is for Weight Loss

Despite these findings, the research does not suggest that exercise is useless. Even if the weight-loss impact of a workout is lower than expected, exercise provides vital benefits that occur regardless of the number on the scale, including:

  • Improved cardiovascular health

  • Increased insulin sensitivity

  • Reduced visceral fat

  • Enhanced mental health

Ultimately, this research illustrates why it is so difficult to lose weight through exercise alone. It reinforces the medical consensus that while exercise is essential for overall health, dietary control remains the primary driver of successful weight loss.
