
Children of centenarians have been found to share a distinct dietary commonality: they consume a significant amount of fish.
Generally, when parents enjoy long lives, their children are statistically more likely to follow suit. This is attributed to both the inheritance of longevity-associated genes and the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits modeled by their parents. Because dietary patterns are intrinsically linked to the development of chronic diseases, maintaining a healthy diet under parental influence often leads to an increased average lifespan.
To investigate this trend, a joint research team from the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, Harvard University, and Boston University examined the dietary habits of children whose parents lived beyond age 100. The findings were evaluated using the "Healthy Eating Index" (HEI) and compared against the general population average from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
The HEI scores diets based on how closely they align with recommended healthy patterns. Higher scores are awarded for the consumption of fruits and vegetables, a preference for white meat over red meat, and low intake of alcohol and sugar-sweetened beverages.
Unexpected Results: A Targeted Rather Than Perfect Diet
The results were surprising. The overall HEI scores of children with long-lived parents showed no significant difference compared to the U.S. average. In some areas, their habits appeared somewhat unbalanced, as they consumed fewer whole grains and dairy products than typically recommended.
However, specific commonalities emerged. According to the research team, these individuals had a much higher protein intake from seafood, particularly fish, than the U.S. average for their age group. Most also consistently included fruits and vegetables in their meals. Furthermore, their calculated intake of sugar and sodium was notably lower than the national average.
The research team explained, “This type of diet helps substantially reduce the risk of stroke, dementia, and diabetes. It is highly likely to reinforce the ‘longevity genes’ inherited from parents.”
The Role of Fish and Omega-3s
Fish is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, high-quality protein, and polyunsaturated fats. Consuming 80–100 g of fish two to three times a week can support healthy blood circulation and brain function. However, the team cautioned against the daily consumption of large predatory fish, such as tuna or swordfish, due to the risk of heavy metal accumulation.
“Genetic factors have a major influence on longevity, but when appropriate dietary habits are added, the effect can be much greater,” said Erfei Zhao, a postdoctoral researcher at Tufts University and the study’s first author.
The findings were recently published in the international academic journal Innovation in Aging.
