
As the midway point of the year passes, a familiar sentiment echoes among older adults: "Time really flies." There is even a common saying that in your 50s, time moves at 50 kilometers per hour, and by your 60s, it accelerates to 60 kilometers per hour. This vivid metaphor captures a nearly universal human experience: the perception that time speeds up as we get older.
The Subjective Nature of Time Perception
Chronological time is rigid, but psychological time is highly flexible and subjective. Experts note that how we perceive the passing hours depends heavily on attention, emotional state, and the density of our memories. When bored, we hyper-focus on the clock, causing minutes to drag; when deeply engaged, hours vanish in an instant. Similarly, underlying anxiety or restlessness can make a single moment feel agonizingly prolonged.
Memory also dictates our retrospective view of time. A period packed with novel experiences feels much longer in hindsight, whereas a repetitive routine blurs together, making weeks feel incredibly short. This is closely tied to information processing. The more new data the brain has to register and interpret, the slower time feels. For instance, attending an academic conference in an unfamiliar city forces the mind to process vast amounts of new information, stretching our perception of the day. Conversely, staying in a familiar environment with the same routine makes time slip away unnoticed.
Why the Years Fly By as We Grow Older
This cognitive framework explains why childhood feels endless while adulthood seems to pass in a flash. Children interact with the world with high intensity and minimal filtering, constantly absorbing an enormous volume of new perceptual information. Because almost every day brings a first-time experience, they build a high density of vivid memories that naturally expands their sense of time.
As we age, however, truly novel experiences dwindle. Our daily routines become increasingly automated, and we naturally become less sensitive to our immediate surroundings. Because the brain filters out familiar stimuli to save cognitive energy, we absorb less information overall, causing time to feel as though it is passing at an accelerated rate. This phenomenon is remarkably widespread; a study of 918 adults revealed that 77% felt Christmas seemed to arrive faster each year, while 14% remained neutral and only 9% disagreed.
How to Resist the Acceleration of Time
Fortunately, this cognitive acceleration is not entirely inevitable. Psychological research suggests that we can actively expand our perception of time by increasing the density of our memories and intentionally introducing novelty into our routines. Cultivating new hobbies, traveling to unfamiliar destinations, and meeting new people are direct ways to push the brain out of its automated state.
On a daily level, practicing mindfulness can yield similar results. Paying close attention to the sensory details of everyday life—such as savoring the distinct textures and aromas of a meal or closely observing the landscape during a walk—forces the brain to process more active data. Documenting these moments through short journal entries, photography, or travel logs further anchors these memories. Over the long term, practices like meditation can help quiet cognitive noise and enhance conscious awareness. By intentionally increasing the volume of information our minds process, we can successfully reclaim our days and slow the perceived rush of time.
