Actress Lee Yu-bi recently shared her candid thoughts on the societal obsession with being "skin-and-bones." In a vlog uploaded to her YouTube channel, she recalled a period in her career when she was pressured to lose weight despite already being exceptionally thin.

“At the time, I weighed about 42 kg, but I was told to lose weight because my face looked round on camera,” Lee explained. She recounted an incident on set where her outfit was removed for a scene, leaving staff members so shocked by her frail appearance that they apologized to her. Reflecting on current beauty trends, she added, “If you damage your body trying to lose weight, it is hard to undo. You feel happier and look better when you loosen up a bit.”

The Health Consequences of Fixating on Thinness

When the media frequently highlights very thin bodies, viewers can unconsciously adopt these as a standard, leading to body dissatisfaction and extreme dieting even among those who are already slim. This fixation can have several severe physical consequences:

  • Weakened Immunity and Organ Function: Drastically reducing food intake leads to nutritional imbalances and the loss of muscle mass. In severe cases, this physical frailty can impair the function of vital organs, including the heart.

  • Reduced Bone Density: An excessively low body fat percentage can interfere with estrogen production. Because estrogen is essential for calcium absorption, a deficiency significantly raises the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures.

  • Nutritional Depletion: Cutting out entire food groups prevents the body from receiving the vitamins and minerals necessary for daily function, leading to chronic fatigue and a weakened immune system.

The Link to Mental Health and Eating Disorders

The psychological toll of obsessing over weight is equally significant. When self-esteem becomes tied strictly to a number on a scale, it can lead to heightened anxiety and depression. Such a mindset often acts as a precursor to serious eating disorders:

  • Anorexia Nervosa: A psychological condition characterized by an intense fear of gaining weight and a persistent refusal to eat.

  • Bulimia Nervosa: An eating disorder involving cycles of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors, such as self-induced vomiting.

Experts emphasize that the belief that thinness is a moral "right" needs to change. Prioritizing a balanced diet and self-acceptance is far more vital for long-term well-being than meeting a fleeting aesthetic trend. As Lee Yu-bi noted, health should always come before the pursuit of an idealized figure.
