Suction-cup hooks are commonly used in bathrooms and kitchens. They’re handy for hanging cooking utensils, towels, bath towels, and more. However, it’s also common for a hook to fall off overnight. Even if you reattach it, it may not last more than a few days, and the problem can repeat. So what’s the right way to attach a suction-cup hook?

Grip weakens over time

Suction-cup hooks don’t require nails or screws, so you can hang various items without drilling holes in the wall, minimizing surface damage. Even if it’s not your home, you can easily add this convenience. Another advantage is that they can be installed on surfaces that are difficult to drill into, such as bathroom tile.

Suction-cup hooks are typically made with an elastic suction pad—often rubber or silicone—connected to a metal or plastic hook. They stay in place by adhering the suction pad to a smooth, hard surface such as glass or tile and pressing out the air; as the pressure drops, the pad seals tightly to the surface.

But even if it sticks firmly at first, it often falls off over time. That’s because a tiny pathway can form between the rim of the suction pad and the wall, allowing air to seep in. A suction cup must completely block air to keep working. Once even a microscopic gap forms, the vacuum seal is inevitably broken.

Even with a relatively new hook, hanging a heavy item can weaken the seal and cause it to fall suddenly. In particular, if a heavy item drops, it can lead to damage or injury.

Suction-cup hook, how can you secure it firmly?

The method for securing a suction cup strongly is surprisingly simple. First, wipe the wall surface where the suction cup will attach and the suction cup itself with a dry towel to remove dust, oil, and other residue. If there are contaminants, it’s easier for channels to form where air can pass through.

Next, apply only a very small amount of lotion or shampoo to the inner surface of the suction cup. The key is to dab a tiny bit on a cotton swab or your fingertip and spread it into a thin layer. Then press the suction cup firmly onto the wall; the liquid will fill the invisible gaps between the wall and the suction cup. At this time, you should press and hold it firmly with your hand for at least 30 seconds so the liquid spreads evenly across the entire surface, increasing the grip.

Does this work for old suction cups too?

Suction cups that have been used for a long time can harden or become misshapen. Soaking them in hot water for about 5–10 minutes can help the rubber return closer to its original shape. After that, using the lotion method can make it usable again, almost like new.

When you need an even stronger hold, it can also help to apply a glue stick around the rim of the suction cup. It lasts much longer than lotion. However, be careful because it may leave residue when removed.
