Renowned singer Baek Ji-young recently opened up about the long-term consequences of the cosmetic procedures she underwent three decades ago. Sharing her journey through her YouTube channel, Baek candidly discussed the structural changes her nose has undergone since her initial surgery, sparking a conversation about the limitations of following fleeting beauty standards.

In a recent video, Baek expressed deep concern over the shifting shape of her nose. "My nose was originally long, but at some point, it started to lift, which changed the shape of my nostrils," she explained. During a consultation for a potential revision, her frustration was evident as she remarked, "I want to lie on the operating table right now."

Baek revealed that she originally underwent eye and nose surgery at her mother’s suggestion. At the time, bold double eyelids and a high, sharp nasal bridge were the quintessential standards of beauty. However, as trends have shifted back toward more natural aesthetics, she admits her perspective has changed. "If I could go back, I don’t think I would have had that first surgery," she stated, warning viewers about the "cycle of revision surgeries" where even minor flaws can lead to a never-ending pursuit of perfection.

Why Do Rhinoplasty Side Effects Occur Over Time?

Nose surgery typically involves the insertion of implants, such as silicone, or the use of autologous cartilage to adjust height and contour. The primary challenge is that the skin and cartilage at the tip of the nose are under constant pressure.

If an implant is set too high or the patient’s skin is naturally thin, there is a significant long-term risk of the skin thinning further, leading to inflammation or even the protrusion of the implant. Furthermore, even when using one's own cartilage, the body may absorb the material unevenly, causing the angle of the nose tip to shift.

In cases of recurring inflammation, a condition known as "contracture" can occur. This is characterized by tissue contraction that pulls the nose tip upward, making the nose appear shorter and increasing nostril exposure. Because the nose sits at the center of the face, a change of just 2–3mm can drastically alter a person’s entire impression.

What to Confirm Before Seeking Revision Surgery

Revision surgery is significantly more complex than an initial procedure. Surgeons must often navigate existing scar tissue and may find that the patient lacks sufficient remaining cartilage, necessitating additional harvesting from the ear or ribs.

Before committing to a revision, it is essential to distinguish between a structural deformity and a subjective aesthetic complaint. If contracture or inflammation is present, the tissue must be allowed to stabilize—typically for at least six months—before surgery is performed. Prioritizing functional health over correcting multiple aesthetic areas at once can also help minimize the risk of further complications.

Proportions Over Trends: A Sustainable Approach

Medical experts advise that the key to a successful outcome is prioritizing facial harmony and proportions rather than trendy shapes. The distance from the glabella (the area between the eyebrows) to the nose tip and the specific thickness of the nostrils vary by individual.

Applying a "one-size-fits-all" trendy standard often results in an unnatural appearance. To avoid the trap of repeated surgeries, patients are encouraged to have thorough consultations and set objective, realistic expectations. As Baek Ji-young advised her fans: "Don't look in the mirror too much after surgery. There is no end to satisfaction."
