Medytox announced on Sept. 18 that cumulative supply of Nuviju (NUVIJU), the world’s first fat-reduction injectable formulated with cholic acid (CA), has surpassed 30,000 vials to hospitals and aesthetic clinics across South Korea.
After topping 10,000 vials in cumulative supply in June—approximately two months after its commercial launch—Nuviju added another 20,000 vials over the following three months. Sales of the injectable have grown at an average monthly rate of approximately 28%. Medytox attributed this rapid adoption to aggressive targeted marketing and strong demand in key aesthetic medicine hubs, expanding quickly from premier clinics in Seoul’s Gangnam and Seocho districts and southern Gyeonggi Province.
Nuviju holds significant regulatory distinction as the 40th domestically developed new drug approved by South Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). It represents both the first domestic new drug in the country’s medical aesthetics field and Medytox’s first chemical entity developed in-house.
Indicated for the improvement of moderate to severe submental fat (double chin), Nuviju utilizes cholic acid as its active ingredient to reduce common post-injection adverse reactions such as edema (swelling) and bruising. The formulation was specifically engineered to match physiological pH levels and excludes chemical excipients known to cause skin irritation, such as benzyl alcohol and benzethonium chloride.
The drug’s clinical efficacy was demonstrated in a Phase 3 trial involving 240 South Korean patients with moderate to severe submental fat, who received up to six treatments at four-week intervals. In the trial, 88.57% of patients treated with Nuviju achieved at least a one-grade improvement in submental fat reduction, compared to 32.43% in the placebo group. Furthermore, 46.67% of Nuviju patients demonstrated a two-grade or greater improvement, compared to just 5.41% of placebo recipients.
"Surpassing 30,000 vials in cumulative supply shortly after launch demonstrates Nuviju's strong product competitiveness as South Korea's 40th new drug and reflects high interest across clinical settings," a Medytox official said. "We will continue expanding our market presence based on Nuviju's proven efficacy and safety profile."
