While easily accessible without a prescription, excessive intake can cause catastrophic liver damage. Taking a dedicated headache pill alongside a general cold syrup can quickly push levels into the toxic range. This risk is severely amplified if combined with alcohol, which overwhelms the liver's ability to process toxins. Acute liver injury can develop rapidly, and for some individuals, toxicity may occur even at doses generally considered safe.

Understanding Dosage and Labels

The threshold for acetaminophen toxicity varies significantly based on body weight, existing liver conditions, and dietary habits. In adults, toxicity typically manifests when taking 150 mg/kg or more in a single sitting.
