
For decades, the sports science community and coaches alike have preached a strict doctrine of abstinence before major competitions. The long-standing belief was that peak performance required total focus, rigorous dietary management, and the conservation of energy—often at the expense of an athlete’s sex life.
However, a provocative new study from Spain is challenging this traditional "no-sex" rule, suggesting that sexual activity shortly before a game may actually provide a physical edge rather than a hindrance.
Putting the Abstinence Myth to the Test
A research team led by the University of Valladolid recently conducted an experiment to determine how sexual climax affects highly trained athletes. The study recruited 21 athletes with an average age of 22, representing a wide range of disciplines including basketball, volleyball, long-distance running, boxing, and judo.
To ensure clinical accuracy, the researchers utilized a two-phase indoor cycling test. In the first phase, all participants abstained from any sexual activity—including masturbation—for seven days. One week later, the same participants underwent a second measurement just 30 minutes after reaching orgasm through masturbation.
Surprising Gains in Strength and Endurance
The results, recently published in the international journal Physiology & Behavior, found that performance indicators did not decline after sexual activity. On the contrary, several key metrics showed a slight but notable increase:
Exercise Duration: Average stamina increased by 3.2%.
Grip Strength: Muscle power saw an average boost of 4%.
Heart Rate: Cardiovascular activity rose by 7% during the tests.
Furthermore, blood tests revealed that immediately following an orgasm, levels of testosterone (the primary male hormone) and cortisol (a hormone critical for stress management) increased by an average of 15% to 35%.
A Biological "Warm-Up"
The research team explained that the physiological response to an orgasm mimics the benefits of a light warm-up. "Reaching orgasm temporarily increases heart rate, blood pressure, and adrenaline levels," the researchers stated. They noted that these shifts serve as a natural rebuttal to the common belief that abstinence is a prerequisite for athletic success.
While the study offers a new perspective on pre-competition preparation, the researchers analyzed that the surge in hormones and heart rate may simply prime the body for the intense physical exertion to follow.
