Actor Lim Hyun-sik shared his experience of a near-death experience.
Recently, Lim Hyun-sik appeared on a variety show and recalled the time he was on the brink of life and death. He said, "I have been in a situation where I almost died and came back to life," adding, "I felt chest pain while returning home after filming and went to the emergency room, where I was diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction."
Lim Hyun-sik also talked about the experience of losing consciousness while spraying pesticides. He mentioned, "While disinfecting an apple tree wearing a mask, I suddenly felt dizzy," and added, "My head felt heavy, and it was a strange sensation."
He said, "I experienced hallucinations where thousands of ants were crawling around the fluorescent lights," and added, "Fortunately, the local people found me collapsed and called 119, which helped me survive." This leads us to look into pesticide accidents.
Acute Pesticide Poisoning Classified as Mild, Moderate, and Severe
When performing weeding tasks, symptoms of pesticide poisoning such as dizziness or fainting can occur, so caution is needed. Inhaling pesticides immediately irritates the lungs and airways. Pesticide poisoning is broadly divided into acute and chronic. Acute pesticide poisoning shows symptoms such as nausea within a few hours during or after spraying. Chronic pesticide poisoning refers to prolonged exposure to pesticides over years or decades.
According to the Agricultural Research Service's pesticide safety information system, acute pesticide poisoning symptoms are classified into three categories: mild, moderate, and severe. Mild symptoms include fatigue and headaches, with increased drowsiness and dizziness compared to usual. Moderate symptoms include stinging eyes and redness, along with dryness in the throat and mouth. Severe symptoms include excessive sweating, itchy skin, and numbness in the limbs.
If severe symptoms appear, one should visit a hospital immediately. Severe symptoms include blurred or faint vision, pale face, reduced sensation in hands and feet, and muscle stiffness. The symptoms may vary depending on the type of pesticide due to different chemical properties, but if left untreated, it can lead to chronic issues, so it is necessary to visit a hospital if suspected.
Pesticides in Other Containers Can Be Mistaken for Beverages
If you frequently need to perform weeding tasks, you should be careful not to accidentally ingest pesticides. There are many cases where pesticides stored in other containers are mistaken for beverages and consumed. Situations such as eating food without washing hands after spraying pesticides, wiping sweat with bare hands, or tearing open pesticide bags with the mouth can also lead to accidental ingestion of pesticides.
If you find a patient suspected of pesticide poisoning, report it to 119 immediately. Then, continuously check the patient's consciousness and breathing status. At this time, it is advisable to lay the patient on their side with their head lower than the rest of their body. If the patient is unconscious, you should pull the chin forward and tilt the head back to help facilitate breathing.
