
In an analysis of outcomes among cervical cancer patients—a disease often labeled a "good" cancer due to its relatively high survival rate—women who maintained higher levels of physical activity in their daily lives were found to have a significantly lower risk of death.
Cervical cancer develops at the opening of the uterus, or cervix, and is primarily caused by infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). It currently ranks 11th among cancers affecting women in South Korea, with a worrying trend of increasing incidence among younger demographics in their 20s and 30s.
The disease is often considered relatively manageable because the cure rate is exceptionally high when it is detected and treated early. For patients whose cancer is confined strictly to the cervix with no metastasis elsewhere, the five-year relative survival rate exceeds 90%. However, recent research indicates that even among these early-stage patients, consistent physical activity plays a vital role in reducing long-term mortality risk.
A joint research team from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Samsung Medical Center and Soongsil University announced the results of a large-scale analysis examining the link between pre-diagnosis physical activity and mortality rates in cervical cancer patients.
Utilizing national cancer big data, the researchers reviewed records from 8,833 women aged 19 to 79 who were diagnosed with cervical cancer between 2012 and 2017. Among the cohort analyzed, 64.9% presented with localized cancer confined to the primary site, 23.7% had regional spread to nearby tissues or lymph nodes, and 5% had distant metastasis to organs far from the uterus.
The analysis revealed a stark correlation between physical activity and survival outcomes, particularly for patients with localized cancer. Women who engaged in vigorous exercise prior to their diagnosis experienced a 36% lower risk of death compared to sedentary patients, while those with regular, moderate exercise habits saw their mortality risk decrease by up to 38%.
Furthermore, the researchers identified a broader trend across all stages of the disease: higher daytime energy expenditure was universally associated with a lower risk of death. Among early-stage patients specifically, a greater volume of overall physical activity—and thus higher total energy expenditure—correlated with a statistically significant reduction in mortality risk of up to 43%.
This protective effect was notably pronounced in patients aged 65 and older. The research team explained that older patients typically possess lower "physical reserve"—the body's inherent capacity to withstand severe illness and intensive treatment. Consequently, maintaining habitual exercise in daily life appears to exert a much stronger influence on their post-diagnosis prognosis.
The study is highly meaningful as it leverages massive, population-based data to demonstrate how lifestyle choices made long before a cervical cancer diagnosis can directly shape actual clinical outcomes.
Professor Lee Yoo-young of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Samsung Medical Center, who served as the study's principal investigator, emphasized the clinical value of the data. "We confirmed that managing everyday physical activity in early-stage and older patients can serve as a vital pillar for improving long-term outcomes," Lee Yoo-young stated. "Moving forward, these findings will provide essential evidence for crafting personalized survivorship strategies for patients."
The study's findings were published in a recent edition of the International Journal of Gynecological Cancer.
