Both sleep deprivation and oversleeping have long been linked to poor health outcomes, but a precise "sweet spot" for longevity has remained elusive. A new study involving approximately 500,000 participants from the UK Biobank has identified the optimal sleep window for adults as 6 hours 24 minutes to 7 hours 48 minutes per day.

Researchers at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons analyzed data from adults aged 37 to 84. The findings, published in the journal Nature, suggest that those who consistently fall within this specific range exhibit the slowest biological aging across major systems, including the heart, lungs, brain, and immune system.

The Mortality Risks of Sleep Imbalance

The study highlights a U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and mortality. Deviating too far in either direction from the recommended window significantly increases the risk of death from all causes:

  • Short Sleepers: Those who slept fewer than six hours per hour faced a 1.5-times higher risk of death compared to the ideal group.

  • Long Sleepers: Those who slept more than eight hours faced a 1.4-times higher risk of death.

According to the research team, sleep deprivation tends to contribute directly to disease burden and increases the risk of depression in older age. Conversely, excessive sleep impacts health through an indirect pathway. "In cases where excessive sleep leads to depression, 62% of that pathway is driven by an accelerated rate of brain aging," the researchers noted.

Health Risks Associated with Sleep Duration

The specific illnesses to which an individual is prone vary significantly based on their sleep patterns.

  • Insufficient Sleep: Linked to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, arrhythmia, obesity, asthma, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is also associated with higher rates of anxiety and depression.

  • Excessive Sleep: Associated with a higher risk of schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and respiratory or digestive issues like COPD and gastritis.
