
While many parents hope their children grow to be taller than average, new research suggests that significant height may come with specific health trade-offs. A large-scale genetic study of East Asian populations has identified a clear association between greater height and an increased risk of atrial fibrillation and endometriosis.
The study, led by Professor Fuu-Jen Tsai at China Medical University Hospital in Taichung, Taiwan, was recently published in the international journal PLOS Genetics. The findings highlight how the same genetic variants that influence physical stature may also play a role in disease susceptibility.
The Genetic Link Between Stature and Illness
Height is determined by a complex interplay of environmental factors and genetics. While the link between height-related genes and various health conditions has been studied in Western populations, research focusing specifically on East Asians has been limited—until now.
By analyzing genetic data from 120,000 Taiwanese Han individuals, the research team identified 293 genetic variants associated with typical height and five variants linked to hereditary short stature. When cross-referenced with data from five East Asian biobanks, these genetic markers revealed a significant correlation with specific clinical conditions.
Increased Risks for Taller Individuals
The study found that height serves as a predictor for several physical indicators, including lung function, cardiovascular traits, and the age of onset for menstruation. However, the most striking correlations involved two specific conditions:
Atrial Fibrillation: For every 8.3 cm increase above the study’s average height (162.24 cm), the risk of developing this heart arrhythmia increased by approximately 12–15%. Atrial fibrillation causes an irregular, rapid heart rate and can lead to serious complications such as stroke or heart failure.
Endometriosis: Each 8.3 cm increase in height was associated with a 7% higher risk of endometriosis, a painful condition where uterine-like tissue grows outside the uterus. Conversely, shorter individuals demonstrated a lower likelihood of developing the disorder.
Height as a Predictor of Clinical Risk
The researchers suggest that height is more than just a physical trait; it may serve as a genetic "red flag" for predicting health risks in East Asian populations. "By integrating data from multiple biobanks, we confirmed that the genetic factors underlying height are linked to clinically important conditions," the team stated. They believe that polygenic scores related to height could eventually help clinicians anticipate and screen for these diseases.
However, the team cautioned that being tall does not cause these illnesses directly. Rather, the genetic makeup that produces a taller frame happens to overlap with the pathways that influence these specific health risks. Further research is required before these genetic associations can be used for formal medical diagnosis or treatment.
