A growing body of research suggests that Generation Z is prioritizing sleep and personal stability over sexual relations, marking a distinct departure from the habits of previous generations. Experts analyze that this shift is deeply influenced by the digital landscape and evolving sociocultural values, as young people redefine the role of intimacy in their lives.
Rest and Success Take Center Stage
According to a recent survey of 2,000 Gen Z individuals conducted by the educational platform EduBirdie, the hierarchy of needs for young adults has shifted toward self-care and professional security. A significant 67% of respondents stated they would choose sufficient sleep over a satisfying sexual relationship.
The preference for stability extends beyond the bedroom: 64% of participants valued maintaining a stable job more highly than sexual intimacy, while 59% prioritized personal success. Furthermore, nearly half of the respondents (46%) indicated they would rather spend time alone than engage in sexual relations.
While these figures suggest a decline in frequency, they do not imply a complete lack of sexual interest. The survey also noted that 37% of respondents have engaged in sexual experimentation, and 23% admitted to exchanging sexual messages while at work, indicating that intimacy has transitioned into different forms and environments.
The Impact of Digital Environments and Societal Norms
Julia Aleksenko, a pop culture and media analyst at EduBirdie, suggests that Gen Z is navigating a unique historical moment. Unlike the "free love" movements of the 1960s and 70s, this generation has matured in an era where digital platforms often replace physical gathering spaces. "Generation Z is being led to spend time on digital platforms rather than in physical spaces," Aleksenko noted, leading them to focus on more easily accessible forms of relaxation.
This shift has also brought about a more communicative approach to intimacy. The survey found that 82% of respondents believe boundaries should be discussed before becoming intimate, and an impressive 92% expressed confidence in their ability to communicate a refusal during sexual encounters.
A Broader Trend of Abstinence
This phenomenon is part of a larger trend affecting the general U.S. population. According to the General Social Survey, 1 in 3 men and 1 in 5 women reported not having had sexual relations in the past year.
In her book Sextinction: The Decline of Sex and the Future of Intimacy, sexual neuroscientist Debra Soh points out that the social media environment often fosters unrealistically high standards, which can distort relationship expectations. Additionally, some experts observe that young women are increasingly choosing abstinence as a response to perceived male-centric dynamics in casual dating culture. As the definition of "the good life" evolves, Gen Z appears to be leading a movement that values a well-rested mind and a stable career as the ultimate forms of fulfillment.
