“Sold out in 11 minutes”: What’s driving Daegu’s summer boom?

Daegu, South Korea’s hottest city, is turning itself into a sprawling summer festival stage.

With interest surging from visitors in South Korea and abroad, paid seats at the festival’s main venue sold out just 11 minutes after ticket sales opened.

South Korea’s signature summer event, the “2026 Daegu Chimac Festival,” will run for five days from July 1 to 5 across the Duryu Park area in Daegu.

This year’s festival has adopted the slogan “Chimac 26 (Takeoff)” and will introduce an AI-based operations system along with a slate of global programming, as organizers push to expand it beyond a local event into a festival for visitors from around the world.

On the night of July 1, a giant “Chimac globe” lights up

The opening ceremony will be held at 7:30 p.m. on July 1 at the 2·28 Freedom Plaza in Duryu Park.

Organizers plan to unveil, for the first time, an extra-large “Chimac globe” object meant to symbolize the festival’s globalization.

The program begins with a “Global Chimac Globe Lighting and Toast Performance,” bringing together key guests and attendees on site to kick off the festivities.

Performance programming also expands this year. On the 360-degree circular stage at 2·28 Freedom Plaza, built around the “Daefrica Waterpia” concept, artists scheduled to appear include FTISLAND (July 1), N.Flying (July 2), 10CM (July 3), Wonstein and Haengju (July 4), and Park Myung-soo and Car, the Garden (July 5).

“From a festival you watch to a festival you go wild at” … from “K-group sing-alongs” to “Chisangnakwon”

This year’s Daegu Chimac Festival is designed to highlight the distinct character of each area, with programming aimed at keeping visitors busy throughout the day.

The 2·28 Memorial Tower parking lot will host the “Chimac Group Sing-Along Club,” where visitors can pair chimac with sets by professional DJs and join mass sing-alongs. Also returning is the “Chisangnakwon EGG Island” at the Kolon Outdoor Music Hall, which ranked No. 1 in visitor satisfaction last year.

There, the “Indie Band EGG Concert” will feature indie acts including Kkachisan (July 1), Yeonjeong (July 2), It’s (July 3), and Far East Asia Tigers (July 4).

The outdoor music hall will also offer 1,000 free seats and will add a “free priority entry system” that provides early-entry benefits to people who reserve in advance through Ticketlink.

Another centerpiece is “K-Chimac Street,” which will span the Duryu Park area. Along with the Chimac Welcome Road, an amusement park and a flea market zone, it will offer programs for couples and families, including the “Golden EGG Adventure” photo zone, the Chimac Pong Challenge and the Chimac Heading Challenge.

All you need is a smartphone … Daegu chimac “takes off” worldwide in AI-powered form

A major focus of the 2026 Daegu Chimac Festival is its “smart festival” system.

On site, visitors can use an AI-based operations platform to check event information, a location-based map and real-time crowding on their smartphones.

A multilingual AI chatbot will also be available to help foreign tourists navigate the festival. By scanning a QR-code guidance system linked to KakaoMap, visitors can quickly find performance schedules and the locations of specific booths across the festival grounds.

For overseas visitors, a “global lounge” will be set up at the 2·28 Freedom Plaza observatory. During the festival, about 200 global guests — including overseas influencers, visiting groups and university students from sister and friendship cities — are expected to visit Daegu, adding to the event’s international atmosphere.

Park Ki-hwan, director general of Daegu Metropolitan City’s Economy Bureau, said, “This year’s Daegu Chimac Festival has thoroughly prepared global-level content and an advanced AI operations system, and we hope that this summer Daegu will firmly establish itself as the central city of chimac that people around the world come to visit.”
