Danish soccer star Christian Eriksen has collapsed on the field once again, sparking widespread concern across the sports world.
During an international friendly between Denmark and Ukraine on June 7 (local time), the veteran midfielder suddenly clutched his chest and went down on the turf roughly 20 minutes into the second half.
Play was halted immediately as traumatized players from both teams rushed to form a protective circle around him. Medical personnel sprinted onto the pitch to administer emergency treatment. Fortunately, Eriksen quickly regained consciousness and was able to walk off the field under his own power. Following the frightening incident, the match was officially abandoned.
A Nightmare Relived: The Echoes of Euro 2021
Eriksen, who famously played alongside Son Heung-min at English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, is a household name among South Korean soccer fans. For both Eriksen and the Danish Football Association, this latest health scare instantly revived harrowing memories of the European Championship five years ago.
On June 13, 2021, Eriksen started in Denmark’s opening group-stage match against Finland. Around the 40th minute of the first half, he suddenly lost consciousness and suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while running to receive a throw-in. The situation was so critical that life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) had to be administered directly on the pitch.
Countless spectators in the stadium and millions of television viewers watched in stunned silence as emergency medical treatment continued for 15 minutes. Several of his teammates were visibly overwhelmed, bursting into tears as they shielded him from the cameras. At the time, national team officials, medical experts, and his family heavily advised Eriksen to retire, with many believing his professional playing days were permanently over.

A Triumph of Resilience Confronts an Uncertain Future
Yet, in an extraordinary feat of human triumph, Eriksen miraculously laced up his boots once more.
He underwent surgery to be fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)—a specialized medical device that delivers an electrical shock to restore a normal rhythm if the heart suddenly stops beating. It appears this device functioned exactly as intended during his latest fainting episode, successfully averting a catastrophic tragedy.
The Danish Football Association issued a reassuring update following the scare, stating, “Eriksen has fully regained consciousness. He is able to communicate, and his condition is stable. He is currently undergoing additional examinations at the hospital to determine the exact cause of the incident.”
Despite the positive immediate health outlook, prominent voices within the soccer community predict that Eriksen will face an incredibly difficult path to returning to professional play this time.
When he suffered his first cardiac arrest in 2021, Eriksen was 29 years old—smack in the traditional prime of an outfield player’s career, which typically spans from ages 23 to 31, while goalkeepers peak slightly later between 28 and 34. His fierce determination to return to the pitch despite overwhelming medical consensus earned him immense global admiration.
Now at 34, however, Eriksen is entering the twilight of his playing career—an age where even perfectly healthy athletes begin contemplating retirement. Furthermore, there is no medical guarantee that he will not experience another life-threatening cardiac event on the pitch.
"It seems highly unlikely that professional clubs will be willing to sign a contract with a player who has now suffered an on-field cardiac collapse twice," a soccer official noted. "This was an unprecedented, terrifying situation where tens of thousands of fans could have witnessed a fatal tragedy on live television. Many officials believe retirement is the most sensible path forward, both for his own safety and for the well-being of his teammates and fans."
