Most households have a jar of mayonnaise tucked away in the refrigerator. In the bustle of daily life, it is easy for these jars to slip past their expiration date. However, even if it is no longer safe for consumption, mayonnaise can be a surprisingly effective tool for household maintenance before it hits the trash.
Loosening Kitchen Grease
Mayonnaise is an emulsion of cooking oil, egg yolks, vinegar, and salt. This high oil and lecithin content makes it a useful solvent for breaking down stubborn, greasy grime found under range hoods or between kitchen tiles.
To use, spread a thin layer over the affected area and allow it to sit for 10 to 20 minutes. Afterward, wipe the surface with a paper towel and follow up with a damp cloth and mild detergent. The lipids in the mayonnaise help soften hardened grease, making it far easier to scrub away.
Removing Water Rings from Wood Furniture
Mayonnaise may also help diminish the appearance of unsightly water rings or heat marks on solid-wood tables. These marks typically occur when moisture or heat penetrates the wood's finish.
Apply a small amount of mayonnaise directly to the mark and let it sit for approximately 15 minutes. Gently buff the area with a soft, dry cloth; the oils can seep into the finish to help restore the wood's appearance. Because different finishes react uniquely to oils, it is always best to test this method on an inconspicuous area first to ensure no discoloration occurs.
Erasing Sticker Residue
Dealing with the sticky adhesive left behind by labels or parking stickers can be frustrating. Mayonnaise serves as an effective adhesive remover for glass and plastic surfaces.
For stubborn residue—such as a sticker on a car window—apply a layer of mayonnaise and wait 15 to 20 minutes. The oils help break down the adhesive bond, allowing the film to be wiped away more easily with a dry cloth or a non-abrasive sponge. This technique is equally effective for removing labels from glass jars and plastic containers, leaving them clean and ready for reuse.
