Actress Choi Ji-woo has been named the official ambassador for the Korean Diabetes Association.
The appointment ceremony took place on the 4th at the association’s headquarters. The organization stated that the decision was based on Choi’s sincere performance in the recently released film Sugar, noting that her deep empathy for diabetes patients and their families aligns perfectly with the association’s mission.
In the film, Choi portrays "Mira," a mother raising a child with Type 1 diabetes. Her performance delicately captures the daily struggles of a family managing blood sugar levels, and her portrayal of a mother fighting to protect her child’s health resonated deeply with audiences, offering comfort to many in similar situations.
While filming, the cast—including Choi—reportedly realized that diabetes is a challenge that requires the understanding and care of both families and society as a whole. This shared awareness motivated Choi to accept the role of ambassador.
Kim Sung-rae, Chairman of the Korean Diabetes Association, stated, “Choi Ji-woo’s sincere performance has left a profound impact on how our society views the reality of those living with diabetes. I hope her warm influence will help dismantle prejudices and provide a message of hope to patients and their families.”
Choi expressed her commitment, saying, “While preparing for the film, I learned that diabetes is not a battle fought alone, but a condition that the entire family carries together. I hope to contribute, even in a small way, to spreading a correct understanding of the disease and fostering wider empathy.”
Following this appointment, the Korean Diabetes Association plans to strengthen its public communication and continue various public interest campaigns focused on diabetes prevention, management, and awareness.
