The severe bloodshot appearance of one eye of Emmanuel Macron (48), the President of France, has become a hot topic.
During a public New Year's address to French military personnel on the 15th, President Macron stated, "I apologize for my eye, which does not look good in appearance," and added, "It is not dangerous at all." In reality, one of Macron's eyes has turned red in the white part.
According to foreign reports, several ophthalmologists suspect that President Macron's bloodshot symptoms are due to 'subconjunctival hemorrhage.'
Can occur due to a sudden increase in intraocular pressure
Subconjunctival hemorrhage is literally bleeding that occurs beneath the conjunctiva of the eye. It can be understood as blood pooling in the white part of the eye.
Subconjunctival hemorrhage can occur when blood pressure suddenly rises due to strong coughing, vomiting, etc., causing the tiny blood vessels in the eye to burst. It can also happen when a person exerts strong force, such as lifting heavy objects or rubbing the eyes vigorously. Additionally, it can occur in individuals who have had prolonged high blood pressure, those on anticoagulants that prevent blood clotting, or in older individuals whose blood vessels have weakened due to aging.
If accompanied by pain or blurred vision, it is dangerous and requires examination
Subconjunctival hemorrhage usually heals on its own. It typically disappears naturally within 1 to 2 weeks without any special treatment. However, if symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks, or if they are increasing, or if there is accompanying eye pain or blurred vision, or if bleeding occurs repeatedly, it is dangerous. It is advisable to get examined as there may be damage to other parts of the eye or issues with blood pressure regulation or blood clotting functions in the body.
There are lifestyle habits that can help prevent subconjunctival hemorrhage. One should avoid rubbing the eyes vigorously and should steer clear of situations that require sudden exertion. Individuals with constipation are at risk due to frequent straining in the bathroom. It is important to increase dietary fiber and fluid intake to alleviate constipation symptoms.
For vascular health, it is good to take Vitamin C, ensure adequate protein intake, and avoid smoking, which can cause vascular damage.
